Donald Sturrock
Donald Sturrock was born in 1961, and grew up in England and South America. As a producer at the BBC he produced and directed many documentary films including award-winning portraits of the composers Bela Bartok and Alfred Schnittke. Since leaving the BBC in 1992 he has written and directed for television, film, theatre, music theatre and opera - mainly specialising in new work. Highlights include a television version of “Little Red Riding Hood” with Danny DeVito, Ian Holm and Julie Walters and choreography by Matthew Bourne, and the Grammy award nominated “The Art of Piano”.
In 1998, he directed the world premiere of Tobias Picker's opera “Fantastic Mr. Fox” for the Los Angeles Opera, with designs by Gerald Scarfe. Future projects include the libretto for Eleanor Alberga's new opera, “Letters of Betrayed Love”, based on a story by Isabel Allende, for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (2009), and a biography of Roald Dahl.
