Press Release #1 / August, 2nd 2007
After the successful premiere of DOKU.ARTS in 2006, we are delighted to announce our second edition of this international festival, which is unique in Europe. DOKU.ARTS – International Festival for Films on Art takes place from September 19th to September 23rd, 2007 in Berlin. The entire program will be screened at the Academy of Arts (cinema with 500 seats).
For this year’s program we received applications from 25 countries from which we have chosen the best for you. The new documentaries about art that we have selected include much more than the usual Biopic about a famous artist. The festival is dedicated to present the scope and great variety, the imaginativeness and pleasure of experimentation in this genre.
From long term observations to filmic essays, from compilations to homage films - at DOKU.ARTS, both traditional and contemporary forms of documentary filmmaking are present. They approach the process of creation, reveal the political and social contexts in which artists work; they observe intelligently and narrate with imaginative camerawork and editing and are thereby artistic in themselves.
The program includes documentaries on Louise Bourgeois, Edward Burtynsky, Marlon Brando, Michael Hamburger, Ariane Mnouchkine, Haruki Murakami, Walter Murch, Alice Neel and Peter Sellars. Many of the films are only to be seen in Germany at DOKU.ARTS. All filmmakers will be present to introduce their films at the festival.
